How is Tāne different from construction project management software?

Tāne is focused specifically on the communication between clients (homeowners or designers) and contractors, something that most construction project management tools ignore. Unlike construction project management software, Tāne is simple to set up and use, affordable and fully accessible to homeowners and designers. With Tāne, clients no longer have to “chase” contractors for updates and builders can focus on building, rather than spending time worrying about managing client expectations.

Why should I use Tāne if I can text or email?

For Homeowners and Designers: We all get hundreds of emails and texts a week. It can be difficult to keep track of each task and action in all that noise. You end up wasting time searching through email, texts and WhatsApp messages to track down a conversion you’re sure you’ve had! Tāne keeps all communication related to your home project in one place, making it simple to track decisions and progress. And it’s not just conversations: documents, like permits and invoices, and photos of the project are easily accessible in Tāne.

For General Contractors: With Tāne, you don’t have to remember to keep your client informed or spend time typing out long email updates. Our smart and simple workflows guide you to create an update with all the relevant information in just a few taps. And by keeping all the information about a project in one place, we make conversations with clients straight-forward and easy. Unlike text and email, Tāne saves you time and keeps your clients happy, so you can focus on building.

How much does Tāne cost?

We're offering free standard tier memberships to users who sign up by December 31, 2020.

We will be introducing premium subscription tiers with additional features at a later date. Users who signed up before December 31, 2020 will keep their standard tier subscription at no cost and will have the option to upgrade to a premium tier.

How does project setup work on Tāne?

Setting up a new home project on Tāne is easy and both clients and contractors can do so. We start with the basics, like the property location, project budget and estimated completion date. You can also upload a picture of your project.

Then, we guide you through entering the project deliverables. These are the major categories of work involved in the project, like “Demolition”, “Bedroom” and “Kitchen”. You can choose from our list of popular deliverables or add your own. This information will be used in project communications and you’ll be able to easily find updates and documents related to a particular deliverable by tapping on it.

For General Contractors, project setup includes adding work details for each deliverable. These are detailed work items, like “Tile” or “Paint”, that outline the tasks to be done on the project. The work details you enter during project setup will make it easier to send updates as the project goes on. But don’t worry if you missed anything - you can always add more later. Both General Contractors and clients can review and edit the work details for the whole project or for a particular deliverable.

The final step of setup is adding your partner on the project: for homeowners and designers, it will be the General Contractor and for builders, the homeowner or designer.

How do I send an update in Tāne?

Tāne will prompt General Contractors/builders to send their first update the day after the project begins. In the first update, we'll focus on your upcoming plans. You'll guided to pick the project deliverables and detailed work items you plan to tackle from the ones you entered during setup (and you can always add new ones, as needed).

For all subsequent updates, Tāne will remind you of what you planned to work on and will guide you through letting your client know how things went. You'll be able to attach photos, videos and relevant documents to showcase your progress. Then, you'll be asked to specify what you plan on working next. Again, you'll be picking from the items you entered during setup, so it just takes a few taps.

Tāne takes these inputs and puts them together into a personalized message for your client, so you don't have to spend time word-smithing. We'll notify your client when you've sent an update and add it to the project's history.

You can send updates as often as you like, but don't worry about keeping it top of mind - Tāne will automatically remind you to send an update if you go too long without one.

Sending an update takes just a few minutes with Tāne so you can get back to more important stuff, like building or having a well-deserved beer with your crew.

How do I ask a question in Tāne?

Whether checking in on upcoming work or if a decision needs to be made, both clients and builders can ask each other questions in Tāne.

You can enter your question and attach any relevant pictures, videos or documents. Tāne will notify your partner user that a question is waiting and will let you know once they respond. The discussion is added to the project history in Tāne so that you can easily reference it in the future.

How is project progress tracked in Tāne?

Tāne builds a detailed project history with every update and question that is sent. During the update flow, we capture the progress against each deliverable and detailed work item, as well as the project overall. So, as the builder and client communicate, Tāne captures when work was completed without any additional effort from the builder.

We also make it easy to check the progress on a particular project deliverable. Interested to know how things are going on the kitchen renovation? Simply click into the "Kitchen" deliverable and you'll see progress on the detailed work items, along with any relevant communications and documents.

Can I manage more than one project at the same time?

Yes! Tāne keeps all the information for each project clearly organized to make it easy for you to focus on the work that matters.

Do I need to download another application to use this?

Tāne uses text messaging and mobile web so you can use this on any current smartphone (iOS or Android) without downloading another application.

Add a shortcut to Tāne to your homescreen for easy access in the future.

But what if I want to download another application to use this?

Sure thing! Native mobile applications for iOS and Android will be available in a few months.

Can I add my architect & subcontractors to Tāne?

Right now, Tāne supports the core relationship between homeowner or designer and general contractor/builder. We are working on enabling multiple user roles so that the entire project team can use Tāne and plan to have this available in a few months.

I have a great idea for Tāne, how do I send it to you?
